Description

Tinctures have been used for centuries as a method to preserve and administer the beneficial properties of various herbs and botanicals. Tinctures have a longer shelf life than other herbal preparations. The alcohol or glycerin are able to extract the active compounds from the plant material creating a concentrated liquid solution.

We turned our Inhale tea into a tincture. It is amazing for keeping your lungs happy and healthy. It can also be used during cold and flu season. The herbs in this tea are both aromatic and lung tonic herbs. It is a great support to your respiratory system.

It is a great addition to our cold line. Pair it with our Elderberry syrup, our Inhale Roll on and Salve, and our diffuser blend  to help you kick your cold good bye.

Lemon Balm: This herb is sometimes called a nervous system trophorestorative (Hoffmann, 2003), a word indicating that over time, an herb tonifies, nourishes, and restores balance to the body, usually with an affinity to a particular organ or body system (American Botanical Council, n.d.).
Calendula Flower:  In Chinese medicine, calendula is aligned with the Liver and Lung meridians. It’s anti-viral, a  study from the 1970s indicated that a calendula flower tincture suppressed the replication of viruses such as influenza APR-8, influenza A2, and herpes simplex in vitro (Bogdanova et al., 1970, as cited in Muley et al., 2009). Herbalist Julian Barker (2001). Calendula is also used as an immune tonic (Popham, n.d.). It is known as a European peasant tonic for the immune system, particularly in wintertime, as it may remove old, toxic lymphatic congestion and stubborn infections (Wood, 2008)
Mullein Leaf: Rich in mucilage and saponins and a specific to the respiratory system, mullein is an expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-spasmodic useful for bronchitis and dry coughing, and as a general tonifying herb for the respiratory system (Hoffmann, 2003; Hardin, 2009). Mullein’s expectorant action boosts coughing to effectively aid the body in removing congestion and is especially beneficial for dry or non-productive coughing associated with wheezing (mcdonald, n.d). The German Commission E has approved the flower for catarrhs of the respiratory tract. It is used for coughs, asthma, colds, bronchitis, and other lung and respiratory system issues.
Red Clover: Red clover contains vitamin C, several B vitamins, and beta-carotene (which the body converts into vitamin A), as well as minerals including calcium, chromium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, tin, copper, selenium, zinc, and manganese (Gladstar, 2012; Pedersen, 1998). As herbalist Rosemary Gladstar (2012) says, “This little wildflower truly can be considered one of nature’s best vitamin and mineral supplements” (p. 193).
Peppermint Leaf: Peppermint is a traditional herb for fevers, colds, and flus (Hoffmann, 2003) due to the aforementioned antimicrobial, diaphoretic, and analgesic actions. In addition, peppermint is an anticongestant and antitussive (cough suppressing). Inhalation of the volatile oils in peppermint oil or tea helps nasal congestion in the most pleasant, aromatic way. As for coughs, based on their review of clinical studies, McKay and Blumberg (2006) concluded “compared with placebo menthol did reduce coughing induced…in 20 healthy subjects…suggesting its effectiveness as an antitussive agent.” The volatile oils in peppermint are antimicrobial and are effective against a range of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections. Peppermint leaf tea and/or oil shows antiviral activity against influenza A, herpes simplex (cold sores), newcastle, and vaccinia (smallpox) in vitro; antibacterial activity against multiple human pathogens of the respiratory and digestive tract in vitro; and antifungal activity (McKay & Blumberg, 2006).
